Akadema is a company founded by the Gillian brothers in 1997. Akadema makes innovative gear based on an in-depth knowledge of the game from playing the game. In less than a decade, they have become one of the hottest baseball and softball equipment companies in America for professional, college, high school and serious youth players.
How did it all start? A former professional baseball player, company co-founder Lawrence Gilligan recognized that there had been little or no innovation in baseball gloves for decades. So he decided to do something about it. Along with his brother Joe, Lawrence started Akadema with the purpose of designing a series of new innovative gloves that would improve a player’s performance. They added Kris Totten, a former professional player to the management team.
Among Akadema’s first innovations was the revolutionary Reptilian – a near fingerless infielder’s glove that allows for a quicker and smoother ball transfer. A new catcher’s mitt featuring “stress wedge” technology, designed with the assistance of Hall of Fame catcher Gary Carter, soon followed. Current big leaguers and baseball legends Ozzie Smith and Carl Yastrzemski have also lent their expertise to Akadema. Resulting in the design of some of the most innovative sports equipment on the market.
For Akadema, it’s simple. If you want to make the best sports equipment, you consult the best athletes.
